General: 228 Schools from 7 states and Ontario (first entries from CA & KY)

                4859 finishers in the 23 races

Weather: Perfect.  Low 60’s in AM to low 70’s in PM. Low Humidity. Breezy.

Courses: Remarkably firm after all-day rain on Friday. 

                Varsity, Var.‘B’, Soph: 3.0 miles  4 moderate uphills, a fast, racing course.

                Mostly grass, about 1000 yds. of bike path

                Jr. High: 1.48 miles, almost all on the Varsity course.

 

MOST NOTEWORTHY: New Boys Varsity course record of 14:35 by Stephane

                                             Hetherington, St. Michael’s, Toronto.  He’s a 5th-year

                                             Student. (We allow them in our meet so long as they have

                                             not turned 19 before July 1, ‘02.) Old record of 14:48 set

                                             last year by Peter Meindl of Orchard Park (NY) H.S.

 

                                              3rd best-ever time of 17:13 by Michelle Sikes, a senior

                                              from Lakewood (OH) H.S.   Course record is 17:05 by

                                              Molly Huddle, Notre Dame (Elmira, NY) last year.

 

                                              Boys AA and AAA titles went to meet newcomers

                                              McFarland (CA) and Ridgewood (NJ).

                                              Walkerton (Ont) 14:45.   Dan McKenna 12 Liverpool,

                                              fastest  USA runner of the day, 3rd in 14:50.

                                              First 34 runners under 16:00!!  Fastest boys race

                                              in the meet’s 38 years.

                                                Fifth straight win at McQ for HF-L.

                           Girls AAA -  Strongsville OH decisive winner  (66) over  Ithaca 135

                                                  and Fairport 140.   

                                                  Sikes, 1st in ’00 and 3rd in ‘01, led all the way.  In the

                                                  race for 2nd, Amanda Griggs 9 Hilton topped Katie

                                                  DeRusso 12 of Fairport, 17:56 to 18:05. Only 5 girls

                                                  broke 18:00  in the 6 varsity races.

 

                              Others – Three of the four Boys unseeded races won in very fast

                                              times:  Colin Meyers 11 St. Mary’s, Lancaster NY  15:20

                                              in  A-3,  Kyle Heath 11 Victor NY 15:20 in  AA-2, and

                                              Jeff Eggleston 12 Greece (NY)Arcadia  15:05 in AAA-2.

 

                                               Boys Jr. High course record (1:48 miles) shattered by

                                               Ben Hahn, Smethport PA,  7:40. Old mark was 7:52.
